Five Signs Your Car Dent Needs Professional Attention

Not all dents are emergencies. But a small mark can sometimes involve chipped paint, stretched metal or hidden impact damage. These five signs can help you decide when a professional assessment is worthwhile.

1. The paint has cracked or chipped

Broken paint exposes underlying coatings and potentially metal. Depending on the location and material, delaying repair may allow further deterioration. Paintless dent repair on its own does not fix cracked paint.

2. The dent has a sharp crease

Sharp body lines and heavily creased metal can be harder to restore than shallow, rounded dents. The feasibility of repair depends on the panel’s material, accessibility and degree of stretching.

3. The gap between panels has changed

If the door, hood or fender no longer lines up properly, the damage may affect mounts or adjacent parts. A fit problem deserves more than cosmetic polishing.

4. A light or sensor behaves differently

A dent near a bumper sensor, lamp or camera can be associated with damage behind the panel. Unusual warnings or behavior should be assessed using the vehicle’s specified diagnostic approach.

5. The panel is difficult to open or close

A door that binds or a trunk lid that latches differently may have impact-related alignment issues. Avoid forcing it repeatedly; have the affected area inspected.

Paintless dent repair versus conventional repair

Paintless dent repair may be suitable when paint is intact and tools can reach the affected area. When paint is broken, metal is badly stretched or panel structure is affected, conventional repair and refinishing may be required.

What to photograph

Take a wide view showing the entire panel, a closer shot of the dent in indirect light and images of any paint cracks or adjacent gaps. This can make a first conversation much more useful.
